Virtual Reality Active Shooter Training on Another Level
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, there were 27 active shooter incidents in the United States during 2018, which resulted in 213 casualties. And so far this year, as of September 3, 2019, there have been 19 deadly mass shootings. To put that into perspective, this year our nation has fallen victim to active shooter incidents at an average rate of once every 13 days.
It is important to note the distinction between an “active shooter” incident and any gun-related situation. The FBI defines an “active shooter” as at least one individual who is actively engaging in killing (or attempting to kill) people in a populated area. More specifically, the word “active” implies that present individuals such as law enforcement and civilians have the potential to influence the final outcome of the situation depending on their responses.
Furthermore, of the 27 active shooter incidents in 2018: 16 occurred in areas of commerce, 5 occurred in education environments, 2 occurred in open space locations, 2 occurred in healthcare facilities, 1 occurred on government property, and 1 occurred in a house of worship.
Because of both the ubiquity of active shooter incidents and the peoples’ ability to affect the outcome of such incidents, it has become increasingly critical to educate the general public on how to respond to these emergencies.
